Unsafe Garage Door Openers? Do you have one?
Is yours safe for children or pets?
With Christmas and cold weather coming children may be playing in your garage. Your garage door opener should have a photoelectric safety beam mounted to the bottom of the door track and located between 4 to 6 inches from the floor. Older openers may have the safety beam installed at 10″ from the floor and it needs to be lower, NO its not grandfathered in.
The safety beam stops the door from closing if your child or that matter anyone’s child or dog is lying under the door. The pressure of a closing door can kill or badly injure a child.
All to often these photoelectric beams are mounted too high and are useless.
Even worse are the safety beams that have been bypassed by being taped together, mounted above or beside the opener….where they do not inconvenience you but may leave your family or pets in danger.
Why don’t you check yours today?
If you have an older opener you should see if it can retrofitted with a safety beam at the bottom of the door.
Failing that, replace the opener with a new one.
