When it comes to garbage disposals there one common issue that seems to repeat itself house after house. The problem is that plumbers are not electricians and electricians are not plumbers.
Most garbage disposals do not come with a power cord attached which means that the plumber has to do his/her best to wire it up and most of them do it good enough that it operates when the switch is flicked on. But that’s not good enough there are basic wiring standards that have to be adhered to for safety.
The wire to the disposal seen in the photo should be in a flexible conduit and not exposed as is generally the case, and where the wire enters the base of the unit it must be held in place with a wire clamp.
Don’t let your disposal be a member of the “badly wired disposal” club!
