Casement Window: Window with hinged sashes.
Casing: Molded trim used around window and door openings.
Caulking: A sealing agent used to Close-Up cracks or joints.
Center Hung Sash: A sash that pivots at the center point, allowing the window frame to tilt in.
Central Heating: A system in which a number of rooms are heated from a central source.
Circuit: Wiring from a load center to a series of outlets or fixtures etc. each fuse or breaker controls one circuit.
Cinder Block: A type of concrete block made using a concrete and cinder mix, usually used for foundation walls or retaining walls.
Chimney Cap: Device attached to the top the chimney to stop rain or animals entering. Some people call the chimney crown a chimney cap.
Chimney Crown: The finish or cap on top of the chimney, seals and protects it from the weather.
Chimney Flashing: Seal installed to provide a watertight joint between the chimney and the roof.
Closed Cut Valley: Method of valley treatment in which shingles from one side of the valley extend across the valley was shingles from the other side are trained two inches from the valley centerline. The valley flashing is not exposed.
CO: Carbon monoxide, poisonous gas, by product of gas or oil being burnt.
Code: Rules, regulations and standards for construction practices. Regulated by state or county officials.
Collar: Pre-formed flange placed over a vent pipe to seal the roof around the vent pipe opening. Also called a vent sleeve.
Collar Brace: Also called a collar tie or collar beam, horizontal length of lumber used to provide support for roof rafters.
Combustion Air: Air space or flow required to provide adequate oxygen for gas or oil burning appliances.
Common Rafter: Any rafter extending from the top of an exterior wall to the ridge of the roof.
Condensation: Water created when warm air comes in contact with the cold object or when cold air comes in contact with a warm object.
Condensate Drain: The pipe or drain that takes away the water produced by the air-conditioning unit.
Concealed Nail Method: Application of role roofing in which all nails are driven into the underlying course of roofing and covered by a cemented, overlapping course. Nails are not exposed to the weather.
Corbel Out: The building out of one or more courses of brick or stone on the face of a wall, often used to support timbers.
Corner Boards: Wood member installed vertically, commonly on external corners against which the ends of the siding are butted.
Counter Flashing: Flashing used on chimneys at the roofline to cover shingle flashing.
Course: Horizontal row or layer of bricks or blocks. Can also apply to a layer of shingles.
Cove Molding: Molding with a concave face used as a trim.
Crawl Space: Unfinished, accessible area under a home, with not enough headroom to stand up.
Cricket: A peak or saddle construction at the back of the chimney to prevent accumulation of snow or ice and deflect water around the chimney.
Curing: The drying or setting of concrete, while maintaining the proper moisture and temperature to promote proper hardening.
Cutout: The open portions of a strip shingle between the tabs.
