One of the most interesting things about inspecting older buildings is the history of the building. Being able to touch and feel something that was made by true craftsmen in another century, too be awed by the exquisite workmanship and the longevity of the building. In this old building that was originally built as a bank, hardware store and restaurant at the turn of the last century there was a surprise in the lobby behind a nondescript curtain.
A beautiful polished, unmarked, fully functional Mosler safe. With the door fully open it took only one finger to pull on it so it would swing closed on its own, the workmanship of the safe was a thing of beauty to see. The intricacies of the dials, the locks and levers that made Mosler safes the most difficult to breach even with explosives (ref: US military) (Unfortunately this “still proud” safe is not used anymore except to store Christmas decorations)
Mosler started in Cincinnati in 1867 and in 1874 became The Mosler Safe Company located in Hamilton Ohio where they became the largest manufacturer of safes and bank vaults in the country. A large sign entering the city of Hamilton welcomed visitors to the Safe Capital of the World During World War Two the factory converted to build Sherman tanks. 2001 the company and went out of business.
