Have you ever wondered why there is sometimes a single receptacle in your garage?
You know that the regular looking one with the buttons is a GFCI protected receptacle (and it often supply’s power to your exterior receptacles). The GFCI is a safety type receptacle that turns off the power to the circuit in the case of an electrical short (the possibility of someone getting shocked).
Power being turned off is a good thing but not if you have your freezer or worse still, your beer refrigerator connected to it, and there is the answer to the question.
The single receptacle is not GFCI protected and is only intended for a refrigerator or freezer.
NOTE: The single receptacle should not be used for anything that may be used/ operated outside or near water.
